Wig Glue, Lace Spray or Glueless? A Stylist’s Guide to the Melt

Wig glue gives the flattest, most secure melt, lace spray offers a lighter hold for shorter wear, and glueless units skip adhesive altogether by using a drawstring, band or straps. The right choice depends on how long you want the install to last, how sensitive your skin is and how often you take the wig off.

Key takeaways

  • Stronger hold usually means more prep, more careful removal and more attention to your skin.
  • Patch test any adhesive or spray before it goes along your whole hairline.
  • Never peel lace off. Dissolve the adhesive fully first, or you risk your edges and the lace.
  • If you take your wig off daily, have sensitive skin or are new to wigs, glueless is usually the kinder starting point.

The three ways to secure a lace wig

1. Lace adhesive (glue)

Liquid lace adhesives are painted onto the skin in thin layers and left to turn tacky before the lace is pressed in. They create the flattest, most invisible edge, which is why they are popular for events and longer wear. Formulas vary, and some are much stronger than others. Many stylists prefer water-based options for regular clients, while the strongest holds are best kept for professional use.

2. Lace spray and melt spray

Holding sprays, often searched for as “glamour spray”, “melt spray” or “lace spray”, do two jobs depending on the product: some give a light hold along the hairline, others mainly help the lace sit flat and blend. They are quicker than glue and usually easier to remove, but the hold is lighter and can weaken with sweat or humidity.

3. Glueless

Glueless units are built to stay put without adhesive. Ours use either an interior drawstring with a tension band, as on our Zara, Nini and Kimberly units, or adjustable straps, as on the Sira pixie. Some wearers add a light spray or an elastic band at the hairline for extra hold. Glueless wear is growing fast: Mpumie Madubedube, founder of The San Hair, told IOL in 2024 that demand for lace, glueless and full-frontal wigs was rising, including thinner lace that does not need glue.

Wig glue vs lace spray vs glueless at a glance

Glue Lace / melt spray Glueless
Hold Strongest Light to medium Secure fit from the cap; varies by unit
Melt Flattest, most invisible edge Good, especially for short wear Good with a well-cut lace; slightly less flat than glue
Skin contact Highest Moderate Minimal
Removal Needs a proper remover and patience Usually washes or wipes off Lift off in seconds
Best for Events, photos, longer wear A day or a weekend Daily wear, beginners, sensitive skin

Is wig glue safe for your scalp?

Used correctly, many people wear lace adhesive without problems. But it is a product that sits on your skin for days at a time, so it deserves respect. Common issues stylists see include itching, redness, flaking along the hairline and thinning edges, usually linked to one of three things: a reaction to an ingredient, adhesive applied too thickly or too close to the hair, or lace being pulled off before the bond is dissolved.

Signs to stop and take the unit off: burning, swelling, weeping skin, or itching that does not settle. If symptoms persist, see a doctor or pharmacist rather than reapplying. For a deeper look at keeping your scalp healthy under a unit, read protecting your scalp under a premium wig install.

How to patch test an adhesive or spray

  1. Clean a small patch of skin, such as behind the ear or on the inner arm.
  2. Apply a small amount of the product, exactly as you would at the hairline.
  3. Leave it for at least a day, following the product’s own directions if they say longer.
  4. Check for redness, itching or bumps. Any reaction means that product is not for you.

How to remove lace adhesive without damaging your edges

  1. Use a remover made for lace adhesive. Water, soap and oil alone often are not enough for stronger glues.
  2. Saturate and wait. Apply the remover along the lace and give it several minutes to break down the bond.
  3. Lift gently, a little at a time, reapplying remover wherever you feel resistance.
  4. Never pull. If the lace does not lift easily, it is not ready.
  5. Clean the skin and the lace of any residue, then moisturise your hairline before the next install.

Give your hairline a rest between glued installs where you can. A day or two of breathing room helps the skin recover.

Common adhesive mistakes stylists see

  • Applying too thickly. Heavy layers take longer to set, show as a shiny ridge and are harder to remove. Several thin layers hold better.
  • Gluing onto hair. Adhesive should sit on clean skin in front of your natural hairline, never on your edges.
  • Skipping skin prep. Oil, sweat and leftover makeup weaken the bond. Clean the area first.
  • Pressing the lace too soon. Most liquid adhesives need to turn tacky first, or the lace slides.

When should you choose glueless instead?

  • You want to take the wig off at night or after work.
  • You have sensitive skin or have reacted to adhesive before.
  • You are new to wigs and still learning how to place and remove one.
  • Your edges are thinning and need less tension and contact.
  • You exercise often and do not want sweat breaking down an adhesive bond.

If that sounds like you, our glueless collection is the place to start. Two easy options:

  • Sira, R2,250: a glueless human hair pixie with adjustable straps that you can wear in minutes. With PayFlex, 4 × R562.50.
  • Zara 10″, R7,500: a sleek single donor Vietnamese raw hair bob with a 13×6 transparent lace, interior drawstring and tension band. With PayFlex, 4 × R1,875.

When a professional install is worth it

A glued melt looks best when the lace is cut precisely to your hairline, the adhesive is applied thinly and evenly, and the hairline is customised so the knots and density look natural. That is skilled work, and a professional also knows when not to use glue at all. At The Penthouse Beauty Studio, our stylists install both glued and glueless units, including hair bought elsewhere, and can talk you through the right method for your skin and schedule. See current prices on Fresha.

The best melt is the one your skin is happy to wear. If you are unsure which route suits you, book an install on Fresha or send our stylists a photo of your hairline and your unit on WhatsApp, and we will recommend the gentlest way to get the look you want.

Frequently asked questions

How long does wig glue hold?

It depends on the adhesive, how many layers are applied, your skin's oil levels, sweat and how carefully you sleep and wash. Stronger glues are designed to last longer than sprays. Rather than chasing the longest possible hold, plan regular removal and cleaning so your skin and edges get a break between installs.

Is lace spray better than glue for sensitive skin?

Sprays are often gentler simply because they are applied more lightly and removed more easily, but some people react to sprays too. Patch test any product first. If you have reacted to adhesives before, a glueless unit with a drawstring, band or straps removes most skin contact altogether.

Can I use glue on a glueless wig?

Yes, many wearers add a small amount of adhesive or spray along the front of a glueless unit for an event or a flatter melt. The cap construction still does most of the work, so you need far less product. Remove it properly afterwards so you do not tear the lace.

What happens if I peel off wig glue?

Peeling lace off before the bond is dissolved can pull out fine hairs along your hairline, irritate the skin and tear or stretch the lace. Always use a proper adhesive remover, wait for it to work, and lift slowly. If the lace resists, apply more remover and wait again.

Do glueless wigs stay on securely?

A well-fitted glueless wig, adjusted with its drawstring, tension band or straps, stays put for everyday activities. For extra security during exercise or windy events, some wearers add an elastic band or a light holding spray. Getting the size right is the most important step.
