How Much Does a Good Human Hair Wig Cost in South Africa? (2026)

How much should a good human hair wig cost in South Africa? The honest answer depends on three things: the hair, the lace and the length. At The Penthouse, prices run from R2,250 for the Sira glueless pixie to R18,400 for the Zara Burgundy 24″ in single donor Vietnamese raw hair. Installation and upkeep are extra, so budget for both.

Key takeaways

  • Length is the biggest single price driver. The same style in 24 inches can cost more than double the short version.
  • Hair source matters next: single donor Vietnamese raw hair sits at the top of the range; well-made human hair units sit lower.
  • Lace size, double drawn fullness, colour work and glueless construction all add to the price.
  • The true cost includes installation and maintenance. A lower-priced wig that needs replacing often can cost more over a year.
  • PayFlex splits any unit into four interest-free payments, so a R9,500 wig becomes 4 × R2,375.

Why are human hair wigs so expensive?

Real human hair is a limited raw material, and every wig is part hand-made. Six things push the price up or down.

1. Length

Longer hair is scarcer and a long wig simply uses more of it. Look at the same style across lengths: Zendeya 12″ is R3,550 while Zendeya 26″ is R9,500. Our Zara goes from R7,500 at 10 inches to R17,400 at 24 inches. If you love a style but not the price, dropping a few inches is the quickest saving.

2. Hair source and processing

Single donor Vietnamese raw hair, collected from one person and kept with its cuticle aligned, costs the most because supply is small and the hair behaves consistently from root to tip. Raw and virgin hair that has not been chemically processed comes next, then quality human hair that may have been steamed or processed for texture. Our guide to raw vs virgin vs Remy hair unpacks those labels.

3. Fullness

Double drawn hair has most of the short strands removed, so the ends are as thick as the roots. That takes more hair per wig. April 26″ and Mimi 18″ are double drawn, which is part of why they sit higher than similar lengths in single drawn hair.

4. Lace size and type

Every hair on the lace is hand-tied, so more lace means more labour. A 5×5 closure is the most economical, a 13×4 frontal gives ear-to-ear parting, and a 13×6 adds deeper parting space. HD lace is finer and more delicate to work with than standard lace.

5. Construction

A fully glueless cap with an interior drawstring and tension band, like our Zara, Nini and Kimberly units, takes extra work but saves you adhesive and install visits over the life of the wig.

6. Colour

Professional colour, such as the balayage on Zoe 24″ or the burgundy on Zara Burgundy 24″, adds processing and skill. Compare Zara 24″ at R17,400 with Zara Burgundy 24″ at R18,400.

What does a wig really cost to own?

The price tag is only the start. Clients who are happiest with their purchase plan for three costs:

  1. The unit. Choose for how often you will wear it, not only how it looks on the model.
  2. The install and customisation. Plucking, bleached knots, a lace cut and styling make a wig look like your own hair. See current installation prices on Fresha.
  3. Maintenance. Regular treatments keep human hair soft and the hairline neat. Our monthly bundles spell out the cost: the Wig Maintenance bundle is R349 a month for one wig treatment, the Wig Treatment course is R2,000 for six treatments (you pay for five), and the Wig Care Bundle is R1,190 for a treatment, wash, installation (SAN HD) and customisation.

It helps to think in cost per wear. As a simple illustration, a R9,500 unit worn 150 times works out at about R63 a wear, and every additional wear lowers that figure. A R2,500 unit that tangles and is retired after 25 wears works out at R100 a wear. How long any wig lasts depends on the hair and your care routine, so treat this as a way of thinking rather than a promise.

Is a more expensive wig worth it?

Sometimes, not always. Here is how we advise clients in the chair:

  • Occasional wear, or your first wig: a well-made human hair unit in a moderate length is the sensible choice. Zendeya 20″ (13×4 HD) at R5,200 is our most-clicked wig on Google Shopping for a reason: straight, glossy and versatile. Pre-order units deliver in 14–27 working days. With PayFlex, 4 × R1,300.
  • Trying the look first: Sira at R2,250 is a glueless human hair pixie you can wear in minutes. With PayFlex, 4 × R562.50.
  • Daily wear for the long term: single donor Vietnamese raw hair usually pays back its higher price in consistency and lifespan with good care. Zara Burgundy 24″ at R18,400 is the statement end of that range, fully glueless on a 13×6 transparent lace. With PayFlex, 4 × R4,600.

Can you pay for a wig in instalments?

Yes. At checkout you can choose PayFlex, which splits the total into four interest-free instalments, or PayJustNow, which also lets you pay over instalments. Payfast is available for once-off payments.

Wig Price PayFlex (4 interest-free payments)
Halle Pixie Frontal R3,500 4 × R875
Zara 10″ R7,500 4 × R1,875
Nini 14″ R9,500 4 × R2,375
Mimi 26″ R13,500 4 × R3,375
Kimberly 24″ R17,400 4 × R4,350

Delivery is free on orders over R5,300, and you can also collect in Sandton.

How to tell if a wig price is too good to be true

A very low price on a long “raw” or “virgin” wig is the most common warning sign, because long, unprocessed hair is genuinely scarce. Before you pay, ask for unfiltered photos of the hairline and the ends, check whether the seller states the lace size and hair length clearly, and look for a written returns policy. Ours is a 14-day policy, set out on our returns page. If the ends look much thinner than the roots in a “double drawn” listing, ask questions.

Spend where it shows

The best-value wig is the one you wear confidently and often. Decide how you will wear it, set a budget that includes installation and care, then choose the hair and length that fit. If you would like a second opinion, send our stylists your budget and a photo of the look you want on WhatsApp, and we will suggest the unit that gives you the most for your money.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a good human hair wig in South Africa?

At The Penthouse, human hair wigs range from R2,250 for the Sira glueless pixie to R18,400 for the Zara Burgundy 24". Long single donor Vietnamese raw hair sits at the top of the range because the hair is scarce and very consistent.

Why is Vietnamese raw hair more expensive?

Single donor Vietnamese raw hair comes from one person, keeps its cuticle aligned and is not chemically processed for texture, so it behaves consistently from root to tip. Supply of long, healthy donor hair is limited, which pushes the price up. With good care, it often holds its quality longer than processed hair.

Does the wig price include installation?

No. The wig price covers the unit only. Installation, customisation such as plucking or bleached knots, and styling are booked separately. You can see current service prices on Fresha, or choose the Wig Care Bundle at R1,190, which includes a wig treatment, wash, installation (SAN HD) and customisation.

Can I pay off a wig in instalments?

Yes. PayFlex splits your order into four interest-free payments, so a R7,500 Zara 10" becomes 4 × R1,875. PayJustNow also offers instalments at checkout, and Payfast is available for once-off payments. You choose your option at checkout, and delivery is free on orders over R5,300.

Is a lower-priced wig a waste of money?

Not necessarily. A well-made human hair unit in a moderate length is a smart choice for occasional wear or your first wig. Problems start when a price looks impossibly low for the length and hair type claimed. Always check the lace size, length and returns policy before buying.
