How long does a wig install last? As a general guide, a glued lace install usually holds for about one to three weeks before the lace needs re-securing, a sew-in often lasts four to six weeks, and a glueless unit is put on and taken off daily. Your skin, sweat, sleep routine and the adhesive used all shift those numbers.
These are ranges stylists commonly work with, not promises. Two clients with the same unit and the same install can get very different wear, and the reasons are usually easy to fix once you know them.
How long does a wig install last? The quick comparison
| Install method | Typical wear before a redo | What usually ends it | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glueless (band, drawstring or straps) | Removed daily; the fit and styling are refreshed as needed | Elastic loosening, hair needing a restyle | Everyday wear, switching looks, sensitive skin |
| Glued lace frontal or closure | Often about 1–3 weeks | Lace lifting at the temples or nape, adhesive breaking down | Events, shoots, an exposed hairline |
| Sew-in (wig sewn onto braids) | Often about 4–6 weeks | New growth under the braids, scalp build-up, looseness | Hands-off wear for a busy month |
Note the difference between how long an install lasts and how long a wig lasts. A good human hair unit can be reinstalled many times. If you want to extend the life of the hair itself, read our guide to making your human hair wig last.
How long does a glued lace install last?
A frontal or closure bonded with adhesive gives the flattest hairline, which is why it is the go-to for weddings and photographs. The hold, though, is only as good as the bond between lace and skin. Natural oils, sweat and friction all work against it, so the edges at the temples and behind the ears usually lift first.
Many clients get one to two weeks of crisp wear, with some stretching to three when the skin is less oily and the hairline is left alone. We generally advise against pushing a glued install much past that. Lifting lace collects dirt, the adhesive starts to irritate, and the temptation to re-glue on top of old glue causes much of the hairline damage stylists see.
What a mid-way touch-up can do
If the lace lifts in one spot but the rest is secure, a stylist can clean and re-secure that section rather than redoing the whole install. It is usually quicker than a full reinstall and keeps the hairline neat until your next appointment.
How long does a sew-in wig last?
With a sew-in, the unit is stitched onto flat braids, so there is no adhesive on the skin. That makes it a long-wear option, often four to six weeks. In a 2024 interview with IOL, The San Hair founder Mpumie Madubedube noted that sew-ins are making a comeback.
The limit is what happens underneath. Your own hair keeps growing, sweat and product build up on the scalp, and braids left too long can start to mat at the roots. Most stylists would not stretch a sew-in much beyond eight weeks, however good it still looks from the outside.
Do glueless wigs need reinstalling?
Not in the same way. You put a glueless unit on in the morning and take it off at night, so there is nothing to wear out. What you will notice instead is the elastic band relaxing after a few months and the style dropping between washes. Tightening or replacing the band, and booking a wash and restyle when the hair looks tired, keeps it looking freshly installed. Our glueless wigs guide covers fit and security in detail.
Does the type of lace change how long an install lasts?
It can. HD lace is the finest and most invisible, but it is also the most delicate, so it rewards a gentle hand at every reinstall. Transparent lace is a touch sturdier and tends to forgive frequent removal. Size matters too: a closure has less lace near the temples and the nape, the areas that lift first, while a 13×4 or 13×6 frontal gives you more parting freedom in exchange for more edge to look after. If you are still deciding between the two, our comparison of frontal vs closure wigs sets out the trade-offs.

What makes a wig install wear out faster?
- Oily skin or heavy moisturiser at the hairline. Oil breaks down adhesive quickly. Keep face creams clear of the lace area.
- Sweat. Gym sessions, hot taxis and Joburg summers all loosen the bond. Blot, rather than rub, the hairline afterwards.
- Sleeping without protection. Cotton pillowcases create friction at the temples. A satin scarf or bonnet helps the lace stay down.
- Touching the hairline. Pressing and lifting the lace to check it is the fastest way to loosen it.
- Too much product. Layers of edge control and spray build up on the lace and make it look heavy and lifted.
- Water. Swimming and long, steamy showers soften most adhesives.
How to make your install last longer
- Start with a clean, prepared hairline. A professional install cleans the skin and applies adhesive in thin, even layers, which grips longer than one thick layer.
- Wrap it every night. Tie a satin scarf firmly over the hairline before bed.
- Keep the front dry. Wear a shower cap and keep steam away from the lace.
- Use light products. A little foam to lay the edges is enough. Wipe away build-up gently.
- Book a touch-up early. Small lifts are easy to fix. Large ones usually mean a full reinstall.
- Plan the next appointment when you book this one. Knowing your date stops you from stretching an install past its best.
When is it time to take your wig install down?
Do not wait for a fixed date if your scalp is telling you otherwise. It is time to remove the unit if you notice persistent itching, tenderness or bumps along the hairline, a smell from the cap area, lace that has lifted more than it has stuck, or matting where the braids meet the scalp. After removal, give your own hair a wash, a deep treatment and, ideally, a few days to breathe. Our stylists explain why in protecting your scalp under a premium wig install.
Keeping your install fresh at The Penthouse
Every install at our Queens Quarter hair lounge starts with a consultation about how you will wear the unit, because a client who trains daily needs a different approach from one dressing for a single event. See current installation prices on Fresha.
If you reinstall regularly, our monthly bundles make planning easier. The Wig Care Bundle, at R1,190, includes a wig treatment, wash, installation (SAN HD) and customisation in one visit. For hair upkeep between installs, the Wig Maintenance bundle is R349 a month for one wig treatment.
Plan your next install now
The longest-lasting installs are the ones planned around real life: your schedule, your skin and how hard you are on your hair. Book your next appointment on Fresha, or send our stylists a photo of your current hairline on WhatsApp and we will tell you whether it needs a touch-up or a fresh install.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I reinstall my lace wig?
For a glued lace install, many stylists suggest planning a reinstall or touch-up every one to three weeks, depending on how quickly the lace lifts. A sew-in is often redone every four to six weeks. Glueless units do not need reinstalling, but benefit from a wash, restyle and band check whenever the hair looks tired.
Can I wash my hair with a wig install?
With a glued or sewn install, you can gently cleanse the hair of the wig, but avoid soaking the hairline because water weakens adhesive. Focus on the lengths, keep the front dry and blot rather than rub. With a sew-in, a stylist can cleanse your scalp properly at your maintenance visit.
Is it bad to keep a wig install on for two months?
For most people, yes. After several weeks, build-up, sweat and new growth under the braids can lead to itching, matting and stress at the hairline. Most stylists would not stretch a sew-in much past eight weeks, and a glued lace install should be redone well before that.
Can I go to the gym with a wig install?
You can, but sweat is the main thing that shortens a glued install. Wear a soft headband over the hairline, blot sweat afterwards and allow the lace to dry before styling. If you train daily, a sew-in or a glueless unit you remove after your workout may suit your routine better.
Does a frontal install last as long as a closure install?
A closure often holds a little longer because it sits further back and has less lace exposed at the temples, where lifting starts. A frontal gives you more styling freedom but needs more care at the edges. Both can last well with a good install and gentle daily habits.
