A wig revamp is a professional treatment that restores a tired human hair wig: a deep cleanse to lift build-up, conditioning to bring back softness, careful detangling, a trim of damaged ends and a fresh style. It works best on good-quality hair that is dry, dull or tangled, not on hair that is shedding heavily or badly burnt.
Key takeaways
- Most “dead” wigs are not dead. They are coated in product, dehydrated and tangled, and all three can usually be improved.
- A revamp cannot replace hair that has fallen out or repair lace that has torn badly.
- Regular treatments help prevent the damage that makes a revamp necessary in the first place.
- Our Wig Treatment course is R2,000 for six treatments (you pay for five), and the Wig Maintenance bundle is R349 a month for one treatment.
How do you know your wig needs a revamp?
Wigs rarely fail overnight. They lose their shine and movement gradually, which is why many clients only notice when they compare their unit with photos from the day they bought it. Run through this checklist.
| What you notice | Likely cause | Can a revamp help? |
|---|---|---|
| Hair feels rough or straw-like | Dehydration from heat, sun or chlorine | Usually, with deep conditioning |
| Dull, flat or greasy-looking hair | Product, oil and spray build-up | Usually, with a clarifying cleanse |
| Tangles and knots at the nape | Friction from collars, scarves and sleeping in the wig | Often, with patient detangling |
| Curls or waves have dropped | Heat styling, heavy products or dryness | Often, with treatment and restyling |
| Split or frayed ends | Wear and heat | Yes, with a trim |
| White residue or stiffness on the lace | Adhesive and makeup build-up | Usually, with careful lace cleaning |
| Visible thinning or bald patches | Shedding from the wefts or lace | Only partly; lost hair does not grow back |
What happens during a professional wig treatment?
Every unit is different, so the exact process depends on the hair, the texture and what has gone wrong. A professional wig revamp generally follows these stages:
- Assessment. The stylist checks the hair, the wefts and the lace, and tells you honestly what can be improved and what cannot.
- Pre-detangle. Knots are worked out gently, from the ends up, before any water touches the hair. Wet tangles tighten.
- Clarifying cleanse. Build-up from oils, sprays, dry shampoo and adhesive is removed so conditioners can actually reach the hair.
- Deep treatment. A conditioning or repair treatment restores moisture and softness. Heat or steam may be used to help it penetrate.
- Lace care. Residue is cleaned from the lace with gentle products and no scrubbing.
- Trim. Damaged ends are trimmed so the hair moves and sits cleanly again.
- Restyle. Straight hair is smoothed, and curls and waves are reset, then the unit is styled the way you wear it.
Where a unit also needs a fresh hairline, our stylists can add customisation such as plucking or bleaching knots. See how we approach restoration in revamping your wig with The Penthouse, and browse finished units in our client portfolio.
Why not just wash it at home?
You should wash your wig at home between treatments. Our step-by-step guide on how to wash a human hair wig covers the routine. But a home wash and a revamp do different jobs.
A home wash maintains. A revamp resets. Stubborn build-up, matted napes and dropped curls need time, professional products and a trained eye to avoid making things worse. It is easy to over-wash, scrub the lace or use too much heat while trying to rescue a wig. As The San Hair founder Mpumie Madubedube put it to IOL, “One incorrect wash…can ruin your wig”.

When is a wig beyond saving?
We would rather tell you honestly than sell you a treatment that cannot work. A revamp is unlikely to be worth it if:
- The hair sheds heavily every time you touch it, and the unit already looks noticeably thinner than when new.
- The lace is torn across the front, beyond a small repairable area.
- The hair is badly heat damaged, with melted or gummy sections that will not soften.
- It is not human hair. Synthetic fibres or heavily processed blends do not respond to conditioning the way human hair does.
- The cap has stretched so much that it no longer fits securely, even with adjustment.
Good-quality raw and virgin hair generally responds best to treatment, which is one reason it often lasts longer with good care. If your current unit is past its best, you can browse the full wig collection for a replacement.
How to prepare for a wig revamp
A little preparation helps your stylist get the best result:
- Do not force out tangles first. Ripping through a matted nape with a brush, especially when the hair is wet, causes breakage that no treatment can undo.
- Skip the flat iron. Heat on dirty, product-coated hair can set the damage in.
- Note what you have used. Tell your stylist about oils, mousses, dry shampoo, adhesive or colour, so the cleanse can be matched to the build-up.
- Bring a “before” photo. A picture of the wig when it was new shows the texture and volume you want back.
- Bring it in a breathable bag. Folding a curly unit into a tight plastic bag flattens the curls further.
How often should a wig be professionally treated?
It depends on how often you wear it, how much heat and product you use, and your climate. As a general guide, a wig worn daily benefits from regular professional treatment rather than waiting until it looks tired. Our stylists can recommend a rhythm when they see the hair. Between treatments, the habits that matter most are taking glueless units off at night, sleeping on satin, using heat protection and keeping heavy oils away from the lace. The same discipline helps your own hair, too; read what to do between wig installs for the scalp side of the routine.
Is a wig treatment course worth it?
If you want your wig to look its best for longer, booking treatments in advance is usually better value than waiting for a rescue. Our bundles make that easier:
- Wig Treatment course, R2,000: six treatments, and you pay for five. Ideal if you own one or two units you wear often.
- Wig Maintenance bundle, R349 a month: one wig treatment each month, so maintenance becomes a habit rather than an emergency.
- Wig Care Bundle, R1,190: a wig treatment, wash, installation with San HD hair and customisation, for when you want your unit refreshed and reinstalled in one visit.

Frequently asked questions
What does a wig revamp include?
A professional wig revamp usually includes an assessment, gentle detangling, a clarifying cleanse to remove build-up, a deep conditioning treatment, lace cleaning, a trim of damaged ends and restyling. The exact steps depend on your hair type and condition. Customisation, such as plucking or bleaching knots, can be added if the hairline needs refreshing.
Can a revamp fix a shedding wig?
Only partly. A treatment can reduce breakage and make the hair healthier, but hair that has already fallen out of the wefts or lace will not grow back. If a unit is shedding heavily and looks visibly thinner, a stylist may advise that a replacement is better value than repeated treatments.
Can a synthetic wig be revamped?
Not in the same way. Synthetic fibres do not absorb conditioning treatments like human hair, and heat damage to synthetic hair is usually permanent. You can gently wash and detangle a synthetic wig, but a professional revamp is designed for human hair, especially good-quality raw and virgin hair.
How long does a wig treatment take?
It depends on the length, texture and condition of the unit. A long, heavily tangled curly wig takes much longer than a short, straight bob that only needs a cleanse and conditioning. Your stylist will estimate the time after assessing the wig, and you can see service details when booking on Fresha.
How does the Wig Treatment course work?
The Wig Treatment course costs R2,000 for six treatments, so you pay for five and the sixth is included. It suits anyone who wears one or two wigs regularly and wants to keep them in good condition. If you prefer a monthly rhythm, the Wig Maintenance bundle is R349 a month for one treatment.
