The biggest wig trends in South Africa for 2026 are glueless wear, short pixie cuts, sleek straight HD lace units, full curls and rich colour such as burgundy. Search interest is growing too: in our Google Merchant Center data for South Africa, searches for “wigs” rose 10.9% over the 30 days to early October 2026.
Key takeaways
- Interest in wigs is rising, and shoppers are searching for specific styles rather than “a wig”.
- Glueless is no longer a niche. Ease of wear is now a deciding factor for many buyers.
- Pixies and short units are gaining attention, from celebrity looks to everyday shoppers.
- Sleek straight HD lace and full, voluminous curls sit side by side as the two most-wanted finishes.
- Braids are part of the same conversation: searches for “meisha french curls” grew 24.1% in the same period.
Wig trends in South Africa: what does the search data say?
We sell wigs online and in our Sandton studio, so we watch Google’s shopping data closely. Here is what our own Merchant Center account showed for South Africa in the 30 days to early October 2026. These are trend indicators from one retailer’s account, not a full market survey, but they line up with what our stylists see in the chair.

Wig trend 1: glueless wigs become the default
A few years ago, a glued frontal was the standard for a flawless hairline. Now many women want the same look without adhesive, so they can take the wig off at night and protect their edges. Mpumie Madubedube, founder of The San Hair, described this shift to IOL in November 2024, pointing to demand for lace, glueless and full-frontal wigs, and noting that thinner “Kim K” lace can be worn without glue.
The appeal is practical. Glueless units use a tension band, adjustable straps or a drawstring, so a busy morning does not depend on glue drying. At the simplest end, Sira, R2,250, is a glueless human hair pixie with adjustable straps that goes on in minutes. With PayFlex, 4 × R562.50.
Wig trend 2: pixie wigs and short cuts
Short hair has moved from bold statement to everyday option. Celebrities have helped: in August 2026, Mihlali Ndamase debuted a finger-waved retro pixie with laid baby hairs in a glamorous shoot, Briefly reported. A pixie wig lets you try that kind of cut without touching your own hair.
Both of our short units are drawing more clicks. Halle Pixie Frontal, R3,500, is a lightweight, face-framing human hair pixie on a transparent full frontal lace, for those who want the freedom to style the hairline. With PayFlex, 4 × R875. Sira suits anyone who wants the quickest possible wear.
Who suits a pixie?
More people than you might think. A pixie draws attention to the eyes, cheekbones and jaw, so it can be adjusted to almost any face with the right shape on top and around the ears. Our stylists can trim and style a pixie unit to balance your features.
Wig trend 3: sleek straight HD lace
Straight hair with a clean, invisible hairline draws the most clicks in our account. Zendeya 20″, R5,200, is straight, glossy human hair on a 13×4 HD lace, and it has been our most-clicked wig on Google Shopping. It is a pre-order unit that delivers in 14–27 working days. With PayFlex, 4 × R1,300. April, our straight raw virgin hair range on HD lace, is also gaining clicks among shoppers who want raw hair.
Why the demand? Straight hair is versatile. It can be worn sleek for the office, curled for an event and slicked into a low bun for a wedding. HD lace, the thinnest lace commonly used, blends well with most skin tones when properly installed.

Wig trend 4: volume, curls and body wave
At the other end of the spectrum, full and voluminous textures are growing. Two units stand out in our data:
- Zini 18″, R6,500: tight curly, double drawn human hair on an HD lace frontal and one of our fullest units. With PayFlex, 4 × R1,625.
- Posh 18″, R6,500: body wave human hair on an HD lace frontal, for soft movement that is easier to maintain than a tight curl. With PayFlex, 4 × R1,625.
Curls and waves are also practical in summer humidity, which tends to fight sleek straight styles.
Wig trend 5: rich colour, led by burgundy
Colour is back, and deep red-browns lead it. TrueLove featured Zola Nombona’s burgundy shade, described as “red with a bit of brown”, in a 2024 hair colour guide Burgundy flatters a wide range of skin tones and reads as polished rather than loud.
Zara Burgundy 24″, R18,400, offers the colour already done on single donor Vietnamese raw hair, on a glueless 13×6 transparent lace. With PayFlex, 4 × R4,600. If you prefer to colour a unit you already own, our stylists offer wig colour as part of customisation.
Wig trend 6: French curls and the return of sew-ins
Not every trend is a wig. The 24.1% rise in “meisha french curls” searches points to strong demand for braids with soft, curly ends, which often sit alongside wigs in the same client’s routine. In the same IOL interview, Mpumie also said that sew-ins are returning. Both styles give a long-wear option between wig installs.
You can book French curls, knotless braids and sew-ins on Fresha, where current prices are listed.
Trends we expect to fade
Trends are cyclical, so take this as a stylist’s read rather than a forecast. Heavily glued, very dense hairlines are giving way to softer, plucked, more natural fronts. Extreme lengths are being balanced by mid-lengths and bobs that are easier to wear daily. And unbranded, unspecified hair is losing ground to wigs that clearly list hair type, lace and length.
How to choose a trend that suits you
- Start with your routine. If mornings are rushed, prioritise glueless.
- Consider your climate and plans. Curls and waves forgive humidity; sleek straight needs more upkeep.
- Test colour on a unit, not your own hair. A coloured wig lets you try burgundy without commitment.
- Protect your investment. As Mpumie warned IOL, “One incorrect wash…can ruin your wig”. Ask our stylists about treatments.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular wig style in South Africa right now?
In our own Google Shopping data, sleek straight HD lace wigs draw the most clicks, led by Zendeya 20". Glueless units, pixie cuts and full curly or body wave wigs are also gaining interest. Popularity varies by season and occasion, so the right choice still depends on your routine and the look you want.
Are glueless wigs a trend or here to stay?
Glueless wigs look set to stay because they solve real problems: quicker wear, no adhesive on the skin and less stress on the hairline. The San Hair's founder told IOL in 2024 that demand for glueless and thinner lace wigs was growing. A professional install is still an option for events where you want the flattest possible finish.
Are pixie wigs in style in 2026?
Yes. Short cuts have gained attention, helped by celebrity looks such as Mihlali Ndamase's retro pixie in August 2026. Pixie wigs are lightweight and quick to wear, and a stylist can shape them to suit your face. They are also a low-risk way to try short hair without cutting your own.
What are meisha French curls?
It is a popular South African search phrase linked to French curls, a braided style with soft, curly ends. Searches for it grew 24.1% in our Merchant Center data over 30 days. French curls give a relaxed, holiday-ready texture and need gentle detangling at the ends to stay defined.
Is burgundy still a trending wig colour?
Burgundy remains one of the most popular wig colours because it flatters many skin tones and looks polished. TrueLove featured the shade in a 2024 hair colour guide. If you want to try it without colouring your own hair, a pre-coloured unit such as Zara Burgundy 24" or a professionally coloured wig is the safest route.
