Can You Dye a Human Hair Wig? Colour, Highlights and Burgundy

Yes, you can dye a human hair wig, but the result depends on the hair. Unprocessed raw and virgin hair takes colour most predictably, depositing a darker or richer shade such as burgundy is far safer than lightening, and anything involving bleach is best done by a professional because wig hair cannot repair itself.

Key takeaways

  • Only human hair can be dyed. Synthetic fibres will not take hair dye.
  • Going darker or richer (deposit) is low risk. Going lighter (lift) needs bleach, which weakens the strands.
  • Hair that has already been coloured or chemically processed is less predictable, so always strand test.
  • Protect the lace. Dye on the lace or knots can stain the hairline you paid to have melted.

Which wigs can you dye?

Think of your wig’s colour history before you think of the new shade.

Hair type Going darker or richer Going lighter Notes
Raw or virgin hair, natural colour Takes colour well Possible with care, ideally by a professional The best canvas; no previous chemical history
Human hair, natural colour Usually fine Proceed carefully; strand test first Ask the seller whether it has been treated
Already coloured (highlights, balayage, burgundy) Usually fine for toning or refreshing Not recommended at home Hair has already been processed once
Chemically processed texture Possible with care Avoid More fragile; risk of breakage or a changed curl
Synthetic No No Fibres will not take hair dye

Our own Mimi units, for example, are chemically processed to resemble blown-out kinky curly hair. That is fine for wear, but it means extra caution with any colour.

Lifting vs depositing: why it matters

Depositing adds pigment. Taking natural dark brown hair to a deep burgundy, plum or richer brown sits on the hair without needing to remove much of its natural colour first, so it is relatively gentle.

Lifting removes pigment, usually with bleach, so the hair can become lighter. Every level of lift opens the cuticle further and weakens the strand. On your own head, new healthy hair grows to replace damaged ends. On a wig, there is no new growth. Over-processed hair stays over-processed, which is why most stylists treat bleaching a wig as a job for a professional.

Can you dye a human hair wig burgundy?

Burgundy is one of the most forgiving colours to put on a dark human hair wig because it is mostly a deposit. The shade family is often labelled “99J” in wig and extension shops, a trade code for a deep burgundy or wine tone, though exact shades vary from supplier to supplier.

It is also a colour that photographs beautifully on deeper skin tones. TrueLove featured Zola Nombona’s burgundy, which she described as “red with a bit of brown”, in a 2024 guide to hair colours worth trying. You can read more about her career in our profile of Zola Nombona.

If you would rather skip the process altogether, our Zara Burgundy 24″ comes coloured in single donor Vietnamese raw hair, straight, on a 13×6 transparent glueless lace. It is R18,400, or 4 × R4,600 with PayFlex.

Choosing a colour that flatters your skin tone

Before you commit, hold the shade up to your face in daylight, not under bathroom lights. A few general guides our stylists use:

  • Warm undertones (golden or peachy) tend to glow with honey, copper and warm brown.
  • Cool undertones (pink or blue-ish) often suit wine, plum, cool burgundy and espresso.
  • Neutral undertones can usually wear either, so choose by mood and wardrobe.
  • Keep the root a touch deeper than the lengths if you want colour to look lived-in rather than brand new.

Your eyebrows matter too. A dramatic shift away from your brow colour reads as a bold fashion statement; staying within a few shades reads as natural.

Highlights, balayage and dimension

Highlights and balayage involve lifting sections of hair, so they carry more risk than an all-over deposit. They also take an artistic eye: placement around the face, how wide each section is, and how softly the root melts into the lighter lengths. If you want dimension without bleach on your own unit, two of ours arrive ready-coloured:

  • Zoe 24″, R17,900: Vietnamese raw hair in a balayage that melts a dark root into honey brown, with soft waves and a glueless 13×6 lace. 4 × R4,475 with PayFlex.
  • Zendeya Highlights, from R7,658: a straight single drawn wig with dimensional highlights on a 13×4 HD transparent full frontal, in 24″, 26″ and 30″. From 4 × R1,914.50 with PayFlex.

How to dye a human hair wig at home (deposit only)

If you want to go darker or richer yourself, keep it simple and safe:

  1. Strand test first. Snip or section a small piece of hair from underneath and colour it. Check the shade after it has dried, not while it is wet.
  2. Start with clean, dry hair. Product build-up can cause patchy colour. Wash gently and let the wig dry fully on a stand.
  3. Protect the lace. Cover the lace and the first few millimetres of the hairline, or apply a barrier, so dye does not stain the knots or the lace.
  4. Work in small sections on a secured head form, from the ends towards the roots, saturating evenly.
  5. Time it carefully. Follow the product’s directions and do not leave colour on longer hoping for a stronger result.
  6. Rinse with cool water until it runs clear, then condition deeply.
  7. Dry on a stand and avoid heat styling for a day or two while the hair recovers.

When to book a professional colour service

Book rather than DIY if you want to go lighter, add highlights or balayage, correct an uneven colour, or work on an expensive unit. Colour is part of the wig customisation our stylists offer at The Penthouse Beauty Studio, alongside plucking, bleached knots and cutting. A stylist can also tone a brassy unit, refresh a faded burgundy or match a wig to your natural hair at the leave-out. Book colour or customisation on Fresha, where current prices are listed.

Caring for a coloured wig

  • Use a sulphate-free shampoo and wash in cool or lukewarm water to slow fading.
  • Deep condition regularly. Coloured hair tends to be drier.
  • Always use heat protection, and keep tools at a moderate temperature.
  • Store it out of direct sun, which can fade reds and burgundies.
  • Book a professional treatment when it starts to feel rough or look dull.

Colour is one of the easiest ways to make a wig feel completely new, as long as you respect the hair you are working with. If you are unsure whether your unit can handle the shade you want, send our stylists a photo on WhatsApp and we will advise before you open a box of dye.

Frequently asked questions

Can you dye a synthetic wig?

Not with regular hair dye. Synthetic fibres are plastic-based and do not absorb hair colour the way human hair does, so the dye will not take properly. If you want to change colour regularly, a human hair wig, ideally raw or virgin, is the better investment because it can be coloured by a professional.

Can you bleach a human hair wig to blonde?

It is possible on unprocessed raw or virgin hair, but going from dark to blonde requires a lot of lift and weakens the strands. On a wig, that damage is permanent because there is no new growth. If you want a light blonde, a professional colour service or a unit sold in that shade is the safer route.

What does 99J mean on a wig?

99J is a trade colour code commonly used for a deep burgundy or wine shade on wigs and extensions. Exact tones vary between suppliers, so look at unfiltered photos in daylight before you buy. Burgundy shades are mostly deposited colour, which makes them gentler on the hair than lighter shades.

Will dyeing my wig stain the lace?

It can. Dye that touches the lace or the knots can tint them, which makes the hairline harder to melt. Protect the lace with a cover or barrier before you start, and keep colour away from the first few millimetres of the hairline. A stylist can colour right up to the front without staining the lace.

How long does colour last on a human hair wig?

It varies with the shade, how often you wash it and how much heat and sun the hair sees. Reds and burgundies tend to fade sooner than browns. Washing in cool water with a sulphate-free shampoo and storing the wig out of direct sunlight helps colour last longer between refreshes.
